Social misconduct Cover Image Book Book

Social misconduct / S.J. Maher.

Summary:

A timely and terrifying thriller that elevates current news topics to the next level with its story of a woman who is the target of a social-media smearing campaign. What happens when manipulation becomes the game on social media? Candace Walker is thrilled when she lands the perfect job at a hip Manhattan tech company and gets a brand-new iPhone. She's more than ready to move on from creating clickbait ads for weight-loss pills and herbal erection boosters, and is determined to dazzle the startup launch team she joins. A week later, though, everything is at risk: Candace is the target of a mysterious stalker and an internet smear campaign. She tosses her new iPhone into the bottom of the Hudson River, begins hiding out in her sister's storage locker in New Jersey, and can't think of a single person she can trust. But Candace hasn't come this far-and gone to such lengths-to give up without a fight. A terrifyingly immersive cautionary tale about social media and the internet, unlike anything you've ever read before.

When you live your whole life on social media, getting hacked means no one can be sure who the real you is anymore. One week after her company-issued cell phone is compromised, Candace begins getting threatening texts that, when unanswered, convert to public posts sharing her most embarrassing moments. When the reader first meets Candace, she's on the run, living out of a New Jersey storage locker. Flashbacks reveal the quick escalation of her feelings of being targeted, and the tragic consequences as her fight-or-flight response kicks in. Some readers may find a reveal in the final third of the novel to be too thinly foreshadowed. Others will love the immediacy of Candace's evasive maneuvers and never-get-caught attitude. Journalist Maher's third novel is full of brand names, millennial slang, and fast-paced action. To fully enjoy this twisty thriller, readers will need to be comfortable rooting for protagonists who are less than stable and upstanding. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
