Having just managed to extricate herself from a draining marriage, Ohioan Zoey heads to New York to crash with Ruth, her much-less-responsible older sister. While Ruth hits the town every night, experimenting with clubs and guys, Zoey experiments with catering, something her husband would never let her do. It's at one of her catering jobs that she meets Tristan. Rich, handsome computer programmer Tristan should be the most eligible bachelor in New York, but he is seriously lacking in self-confidence, and it's really impeding his game. Zoey's determined to make him over so he can find the girl of his dreams, but as they get closer, she is surprised by how much she finds herself wanting that girl to be her. There's not much will-they-or-won't-they with Zoey and Tristan; this is more about Zoey's personal journey than their romance. But the makeover flip is a nice touch, and for readers interested in a story of one woman learning to be independent (with a side of low-stress romance), this is just the ticket. A caterer gives a mysterious, nerdy billionaire a makeover—and gets more than she bargained for. After spending years unhappily married to a slacker husband, Ohioan Zoey Sullivan gets up the nerve to ask for a separation. She heads to New York and moves in with her sister, catering private parties and dinners to support herself. That's how she meets Tristan Malloy, a computer programmer who lives in a gorgeous apartment with a first-class kitchen. Tristan is polite and respectful, but he's also a little awkward, and his clothes are embarrassingly dorky. When the two of them strike up an instant friendship, Zoey offers to give him a makeover. It turns out that Tristan is a diamond in the rough, and his new clothing, haircut, and confidence reveal more than just his good looks. Zoey quickly develops intense feelings for Tristan, but does he reciprocate, or does he want to remain just friends? Zoey soon realizes she has to be honest about her feelings if she ever wants to live her own life. Evanovich (The Total Package, 2016, etc.) creates a sexy and fast-paced romance, but it's hard to get invested when the stakes just aren't that high. Zoey's ex is cartoonishly awful, and her feelings for Tristan are so clear that it's hard to believe she wouldn't act on her attraction sooner. Still, there are enough steamy scenes and moments of sexual tension to keep the interest of fans. Fun, if a little light in substance. Copyright Kirkus 2019 Kirkus/BPI Communications. Evanovich (The Total Package; The Sweet Spot) packs her modern-day, gender-flipped retelling of My Fair Lady with amusing scenarios and likable characters. Zoey Sullivan escapes her stifling life and failing marriage in Cleveland and heads to New York City to stay with her sister. Finally able to pursue her dream of being a caterer, she becomes fascinated with her nerdy and socially clueless, albeit dreamy, millionaire client Tristan Malloy. In some laugh-out-loud scenarios, along with tender moments of self-discovery, Zoey makes over Tristan and then falls for him. She wonders if he feels the same about her, or if it's only gratitude she sees in his eyes. Plus, she has some unresolved issues with which to deal. With a beta hero reminiscent of Rainbow Rowell's Lincoln O'Neill, a creative and fast-paced plot, and lovable characters, this fantastic pairing of romance and chick lit will delight readers. VERDICT Fans of women's fiction by the likes of Jackie Collins, Jane Green, Robyn Carr, and Emily Giffin are sure to enjoy this exceptional new release by a seasoned author. Evanovich (Big Girl Panties) takes readers on a breezy stroll through springtime in New York City in this yummy contemporary romance. Just months after leaving her husband and everything else she dislikes about suburban Cleveland, Ohio, Zoey Sullivan is getting her catering business ramped up. When she gets a call from Tristan Malloy to cater his dinner party, she's delighted. So what if the mysterious, wealthy émigré from St. Croix is a total nerd? He's uncommonly gorgeous and his kitchen is to die for. It's obvious from the get-go—to everybody but them—that they're made for each other. The only hang-up is the teensy detail of Derek, Zoey's husband, who's back in Ohio supposedly pulling his act together before their trial separation deadline expires. Evanovich cleverly portrays two ethical people figuring out how to fall in love while keeping it chaste in deference to the faraway spouse. Readers looking for the tension of a love triangle without the qualms of infidelity will find that Evanovich strikes the perfect balance. Agent: Meg Ruley, Jane Rotrosen Agency. (Apr.)
