Dennis Lehane's debut, A Drink Before the War (HarperTorch: HarperCollins. 1996. ISBN 978-0-380-72623-3. pap. $7.99), introduces Boston PIs Patrick Kenze and Angela Gennaro, who are hired by politicians to find a black cleaning woman who stole important documents. Lehane acknowledged in an interview that this gripping crime novel about racism was slightly inspired by the 1998 Charles Stuart case, in which a white husband killed his pregnant wife, wounded himself, and blamed the incident on an African American male. An excellent example of how a good writer can use an actual incident as a stepping stone to creating something completely different and original. Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information.
